Romance is not uncommon in anime and there are a lot of couples that we love that ranges from different genres! Here are our picks as to who we consider are the cutest anime couples ever!
Taiga and Ryuuji (from Toradora!)
The palm top tiger and the delinquent, no matter how you look at it, there doesn't seem to be any hint of compatibility for these two. True, even from the start, they don’t even see each other as romantic interest as they both have their own special someone that they want to be with. In fact, Taiga is in love with Ryuuji’s best friend, Kitamura, and Ryuuji is in love with Taiga’s best friend, Midori. The complicated love story between these two not only resonates from the idea that they all have different romantic interests, but also on how they live their personal affairs.
As Ryuuji continues to see a different side to Taiga, he starts to understand the reasons as to why she is the way she is. And every time she finds a new side to her, he can’t help but get attached. What makes these two so adorable though is on how Ryuuji deals with Taiga’s welfare (yes, like a mom). Ryuuji thinks that she needs utmost attention and he can’t help but take good care of her. And as how Ryuuji would put it, he believes that the both of them are a dragon and a tiger, where dragon would never leave the tiger’s side (this is because the name Taiga can also be read as “tiger” in Japanese Katakana, and Ryuu literally means dragon).
What they have is an unusual love story of what happens when two individuals from different worlds, of different circumstances, of different personalities get together in seeking for someone to call themselves at home with.
Kagome and Inuyasha (from Inuyasha)
"Sit, boy!" Every time Inuyasha misbehaves, Kagome gives off this command that forces him to sit (or literally, pummel to the ground). Kagome and Inuyasha’s love story is one of a kind. At first, Inuyasha never really took a liking to Kagome. This is because he is deeply reminded of the betrayal of the person he likes, Kikyo, and it is believed that Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo, fifty (50) years after her sacrifice and death. Their romance didn’t really blossomed until Inuyasha came to a realization that Kagome isn’t actually Kikyo and that she is a whole different individual as compared to Kikyo. While it’s true that they hold a lot of similar qualities, Kagome also wants to let the people around (including Inuyasha himself) her to know that she is Kagome and Kagome alone, and not Kikyo.
Hinata and Naruto (from Naruto)
Probably everyone I know watches or have watched Naruto before. And it’s almost no secret that when the anime ended, everyone rejoiced when they knew that Hinata actually ended up with Naruto. Everyone who watches the anime Naruto knows for sure how Hinata watches him from afar. From a simple crush that turned into a full-blown love affair, Hinata did best that she can when it comes to making sure that Naruto is protected, even if it means she puts herself on danger. Completely unaware of the feelings Hinata has for him, Naruto eventually took notice the longer that she is around him. Eventually, when the The Last movie happened, it was then Naruto finally realized his love towards Hinata.
Now, they two (2) kids: Boruto and Himawari, and are living together as a happy family!
Sophie and Howl (from Howl's Moving Castle)
Anybody who probably watched Studio Ghibli films before probably knows this pair. Howl and Sophie from the Howl’s Moving Castle is a fan favorite couple. The anime (movie) started out when Sophie was going to Caesari’s to meet up with her younger sister. She was then stopped by some soldiers along the road, bothering and harassing her. Howl, however, went to her rescue - well, not exactly. When Howl managed to bring Sophie out of that situation, Howl requested Sophie to be with him for a moment as he was being chased by henchmen of the Witch of the Waste.
It’s fascinating to see how the romance between these two actually blossomed. There’s no telling if Howl was actually aware of Sophie situation (of her being cursed by the Witch of the Wastes because of jealousy towards Sophie) from the viewers’ perspective but that budding cheesiness between them just gets you reeled in. Added with Howl’s flirtatious personality, anyone would be lured by his charms and would want to get a Howl of their own (lol).
The romance between Howl and Sophie lies far from what can be seen from the movie alone. In this fantasy-filled romance movie, it’s hard to grasp what happens if you’re not paying much attention.
Winry and Edward (from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
“You helped a woman gave birth… and saved her and her baby. You gave me an arm and a leg so I could stand again. These hands aren’t meant for killing people, they’re for helping them live,” Edward said once to Winry while trying to grasp and cup her hands between his. This is probably the most famous quote that perfectly describes Edward and Winry’s relationship. As childhood friends, they are each other’s family. Winry lost her parents when she was young during the Ishval Civil War, who were killed in action by an Ishval while they were trying to save their lives. And when she found out the identity of who killed her parents, from vowing that she will bring upon revenge to her parents’ death, she pointed a gun to his head. Edward, deeply concerened about Winry’s well-being, tried to stop her with the best that he can. Perplexed and afraid, Winry was eventually stopped by Ed and she added saying that she couldn’t kill the guy who killed her parents.
This scene is what really got me so hooked with this couple. Aside from being good characters from a good anime, the both of them complement each other well. Winry, standing not only as Edward’s emotional and mental support, but also as his mechanic, and Edward as Winry’s knight in shining armor that will never fail to protect her (get it? Equivalent exchange!).
Mitsuha and Taki (from Your Name)
At the start, they we’re technically strangers trapped inside each others body every time they sleep and dream at night. They switch places every time and have to live as the other person. Of course, anybody having their bodies switched would be confused, but they cannot tell anyone about this or else they’ll be called insane, right? Well, they persevered in doing this together, and the longer they do these routines, the more they get to know each other more. Mistuha was able to recognize Taki’s feelings towards his senpai at work and tried her best to help him to get together with her. Eventually, Taki backed as he realized that he is know in love with somebody else, and that is Mitsuha. Now, unable to switch places with her at their sleep, Taki became confused and decided to start a journey into finding Mitsuha.
See how love will do anything, overcome even time itself, in this marvelous and beautiful love story made by Makoto Shinkai!
Koko and Banri (from Golden Time)
As most of the couples in this list, Koko and Banri started out as strangers. Well, not just any strangers. In fact, Koko barged into Banri’s life in a path of roses, literally. This happened when Banri was with his new friend, Mitsuo, as they were finding their classes in their new private law college. While they were talking, a taxi stopped in front of them and Koko appeared. Slowly, she was walking towards them and then, boom, she thrashed Mitsuo with the bouquet of roses she was holding on. Banri however, was enchanted with her. Eventually along the story, both Banri and Koko fell in love with each other, but it doesn’t end there. What everyone else doesn’t know is that Banri is hiding a secret that will cause a huge difficulty not only for Banri himself but for Koko overall. Whether Koko decides to continue this journey with Banri, the decision is entirely up to her.
Sawako and Shota (from From Me To You)
Kuronuma Sawako is a silent girl that only wants to make friends with people, but due to her extreme innocence and her inability to judge the differences with what goes on around her, she is often bullied and called “Sadako,” in reference to the ghost Sadako. Her classmates think that she practices witchcraft due to her appearance: her long, black hair and silent demeanor makes them think that was the case. And then here comes Shota, the guy where everyone is friends with. He first met Sawako during the opening ceremony. It was practically love at first sight! Shota saw Sawako smile at him during this time and he thought that she was the prettiest. Shota has been watching Sawako from the sidelines and is trying his best to make Sawako feel welcome from the rest of the class.
What they have is a sweet, romance that anyone would love to watch repeatedly. Their adorable chemistry when they are with each other makes you want to ship them more.
Mirai and Akihito (from Beyond the Boundary)
They started to know each other when Akihito tried to save Mirai from committing suicide, only for him to be stabbed directly through his heart by her sword. Mirai came from a family of cursed blood spirit warriors that are tasked to kill youmus that scatter around them. Akihito in the other, is a half youmu, half human, but he’s an immortal, and therefore cannot die. Their love story eventually blossomed when they are always caught between life and death situations, most especially when Akihito keeps a secret that Mirai doesn’t know, yet. Their struggle to be with each other despite their differences as a spirit warrior and a youmu only in turn makes their love stronger for each other, wanting to protect the other. On how they’ll eventually end up, one must follow the amazing story that is Beyond the Boundary.
Nagisa and Tomoya (Clannad)
A delinquent and a princess, I guess you can describe Tomoya and Nagisa this way. Tomoya lost his mom at a young age and his life has been different ever since. He became cynical with the world around him and eventually, lost interest in living a fulfilling life. All these changed though when he met Nagisa, a frail, little girl that had to do her senior year again due to her illness. Tomoya became attached to her and started started doing things that would help her uplift her current condition when it comes to social affairs - one of which is her desire to join the school’s drama club. As the story continue to develop, both Nagisa and Tomoya eventually became a couple, enjoying each others’ presence. There are still more to uncover with Nagisa and Tomoya’s story so be sure to watch Clannad.
Usagi and Mamoru (from The Sailor Moon)
Opposites do attract! And that is shown with our couple here, Usagi and Mamoru. Usagi being the incarnate for Princess Serenity and Mamoru as Prince Endymion, and presently known as the Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, to two didn’t really started off liking each other. In fact, Usagi was annoyed with how Mamoru treats her at first, especially when he keeps on calling her names. Both became closer as they battle against the Dark Kingdom. Eventually, as both are incarnates of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion, pieces of memories comes back to them like deja vu. Soon, they became attached with each other and are seen to have countless romantic scenes together. On how they managed to be together, you have the need to watch Sailor Moon for that :3.
Asuna and Kirito (from Sword Art Online)
As much as a lot people hate the harem in Sword Art Online, fans still can’t stop loving the couple that is Kirigaya Kazuto and Yuuki Asuna. They met each other in Alnclad, the realized world of Sword Art Online, when they were trapped inside the virtual reality game until they complete the entire game. Do note though that a soul killed in the virtual game is a soul killed in reality so playing SAO is definitely a real survival mode itself. Asuna and Kazuto, or Kirito as he is known for, met each other when they teamed up for a quest back on the first floor of Ainclad. They eventually broke off their separate ways until they met again only to see Asuna grow into one of the heroes of the game with her joining a guild that is known to be the strongest of all.
The development of the romance between this two started out weird: as enemies to comrades, and to eventually, lovers. Their romance continued to grow as mysteries surrounding the virtual game Sword Art Online continue to unveil itself as the story progresses.
