Ohh the KPop idols that have been turning the world bat-crazy. Breaking records, selling off stadiums around the world, performing at international shows and music events, and being acknowledged by relevant and influential personas and celebrities.
A few years back, a long time ago, who would have thought that they would become this big? When I started listening to KPop, they weren’t this famed yet. Sure, they have started gaining fans from outside of Korea, but they haven’t ventured that much yet outside of Asia.
But as of the moment, KPop groups have dominated probably every nook and crook of the world. They have amassed a huge following from all races and all continents. And these fans stayed for these personalities, their group dynamics, and their music.
So it is undeniable that at some point, these KPop idols might have influenced their fans. Some KPop idols and celebrities have pursued their education and post-graduate degree, have established their own business, or have said inspiring messages to their fans. And If you have been lurking on Twitter, you’d see fans dedicate their victory or academic achievements to the KPop groups that they stan, thanking them for inspiring them to do their best and for helping them go through hard times with their music. And that is a good thing and what I consider a healthy relationship between idols and fans.
Other than that, fashion has always played a huge part when it comes to influence. The fashion style of KPop idols, be it casual fashion, stage outfits, or formal styles, have been wholesomely embraced by fans all around the world. The biggest matter is these KPop idols being called on to be ambassadors and ambassadress of luxury and big-named brands. Left and right, they have really become the darlings of the fashion realm.
Speaking of darlings, a certain group from SM Entertainment has been making rounds, stealing our hearts, inviting us to stan them with their youthful faces and personalities, catchy discography, and their angelic voices. And they are Red Velvet.
Red Velvet: Who are they?
Red Velvet is a group from SM Entertainment and they debuted and grace us with their presence on August 1, 2014 with their digital single called “Happiness.” The lineup originally consists of 4 members, namely Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. The following year, March 2015, the youngest member, Yeri, was finally added to the group.
The concept of the group stays true to its name. The “Red” side, and the predominant one, ventures into pop with a bit of touch of electronic, funk and hip hop. While their velvet side is softer with elements of jazz, R&B, and jazz.
In my opinion, they are a very versatile group. With each comeback completely different than the last. They could go all summery and cheery on one and their next would be darker and poppy.
Of course, being KPop idols, it is sure that they have both eyes and cameras all around them. One thing that is always noticeable, not only for Red Velvet but also for the rest of the KPop industry, is their sense of fashion.
If you have been wanting to dress like Red Velvet members for a while, I have a here helpful guide that will assist you in determining the fashion style of each member. Let’s start!
Bae Irene
The leader of the group and the main rapper, Bae Joo-Hyun, or going by her stage name, Bae Irene, is the face of the numerous brands and has a huge line of endorsements behind her. Despite that, on normal days such as entrance and exit from music shows and airport fashion-wise, she is a very casual dresser.
She is mostly seen in comfortable clothes such as jeans and T-shirts. On colder seasons, she could be spotted warming up with a blazer or a turtleneck top.
Kang Seulgi
Seulgi is, in my opinion, the all-rounder of the group. She is an extraordinary lead vocalist and is the main dancer of the group. She has a certain girl crush aura and it can be seen in the way she dresses casually.
Seulgi has always had an air of chicness with her and is a huge fan of baseball caps which can be commonly seen with her on airports. She pairs her casual jeans with her trusty loafers and knows how to rock her athleisure outfit.
Son Wendy
The one with the angelic face and voice, it can only be Son Seung-Wan, or commonly known as Wendy. She is the main vocalist of the group and is in charge of those amazing backing vocals you will usually hear in their songs.
Now Wendy is famous for one of a few things within her group and that is her Doraemon-like bag. Doraemon-like meaning, her bag seems to have everything you ever need. She is usually seen carrying a bigger tote bag than the rest but that doesn’t really hinder her amazing fashion sense.
I love all of their fashion styles, I really do but I must say, I relate with Wendy the most. She rocks two styles just like her group name. She can either be showing off her skin and figure with skirts and crop tops or hide them all with oversized button ups and jeans.
Park Joy
Oh the joy of the group. Park Soo Young, or commonly known by her stage name, Joy, is the lead rapper and sub vocalist of the group. She is also the tallest member of the group, being 167cm. With her height, comes her wonderful body line.
And with the way Joy dresses, it really shows her figure in all the right places. Her outfit would usually consist of leg-hugging skinny jeans or shorts that show off her long legs. With legs like hers, who wouldn’t really? And along with tops that boast her S-line. But Joy can also be really versatile and trendy as well. In some days, she can be seen rocking her bell-bottom jeans and totally suit the look.
Kim Yeri
The youngest and the most lovable member of the group is Kim Yerim, or known by her stage name as Yeri. She has a very unique voice, passing as a sub vocalist and sub rapper of the group. She was also the last member to join Red Velvet, introduced 9 months later after the group’s debut in August 2014.
Being the youngest in the group and born in 1999, Yeri has always had a knack for modern and millennial fashion. Not saying her other group members doesn’t but with Yeri, it is a bit obvious. Flowy dresses, off-shoulders, trendy patterns, and pieces of clothes that show her figure is what she is commonly seen in.
Red Velvet’s Iconic Stage Outfits
The Peek-A-Boo era was really eye-opening in terms of stage outfits. This time, the girls could be seen either dark velvet dress suits or bright, rainbow dresses on stage. One thing to note in this particular comeback was after a picture of Joy in her legendary body-fit rainbow dress surfaced online, she trended worldwide on Twitter, with international non-KPop fans asking, “Who is that KPop girl in a rainbow dress?”
This comeback gave way for velvet blazers, thigh-high boots, and rainbow-themed outfits.
The Bad Boy comeback was legendary. Red Velvet had a lot of popular and catchy songs but Bad Boy was on a whole different level. I remember the song being well-received by both the Korean and International fans and being played almost everywhere.
The comeback was titled Bad Boy but our girls turned to bad girl looks instead. Just look at the once innocent and sweet looking Wendy, looking totally baddie in her ripped jeans and mesh stockings. This era also showed the girls in various pieces of leather pants, skirts and jackets.
Red Velvet became the queens of summer when they released Red Flavor, with its summer and fruit-themed music video. Another summer concept they did a few comebacks later was Power Up, which surprisingly brightens up your moody day. Talk about LSS with all the ba-banana-ba-ba-bananana.
These two eras gave Red Velvet the summer looks with the shorts, flowy sleeveless tops and bright, plaid dresses.
I cry. The Psycho era deserves better. And by better, I mean more music show wins, millions of streams, roof hits, and iconic stage performances. It is a shame but understandable with Wendy going through a rough time with the SBS Gayo Daejun accident.
But these looks! Served! If you are up to looking like an ageless vampire or a magical dark witch, catch a glimpse with Red Velvet’s fashionably creepy Psycho outfits.
