Sweater Vests

Sweater vests are the easy way to add a knit layer without the bulk of sleeves. Browse the Kawaii Vibe collection for V-neck and knit vest styles to wear over shirts, under jackets or on their own. Check the sizing on each product page, then compare the numbers with a vest you already own.

Your guide to Sweater Vests

What a sweater vest actually does for an outfit

A sweater vest sits between a top and a sweater. It adds a layer across your chest and middle, which is the part that usually feels cold, while leaving your arms free. That makes it handy for offices with fierce air conditioning, spring mornings that turn warm by lunch, and rooms where a full sweater would be too much.

It also adds visual interest. A plain shirt with a knit vest on top looks like you planned it. The vest brings texture, a pattern or a colour block, and the shirt underneath does the quiet work. If you like building outfits from a few pieces, a vest is one of the quickest ways to change the look of something you already own.

This page is a general guide to choosing and wearing vests. Stock changes, so what appears in the collection at any moment is what you can shop. The ideas below also work with knit pieces from nearby categories, and we point to some of those along the way.

Choosing a neckline: V-neck and beyond

The V-neck is the classic vest shape for a reason. It opens up the collar area, so it works over a collared shirt, a crew-neck tee or a fitted turtleneck without fighting any of them. A deeper V shows more of the layer underneath. A shallower V sits closer to a regular sweater neckline and looks tidier with a tie or a buttoned-up collar.

Think about what you will wear underneath most often. If it is mainly collared shirts, nearly any V depth will work. If it is tees, a deeper V can look balanced because you see a good strip of tee. If it is high necks, check that the V is open enough for the neckline to sit comfortably rather than bunching.

Product photos help here. Look at where the V ends relative to the model's chest, then compare that with how you like your tops to sit. If a listing gives a neckline depth, measure a vest you own from the shoulder seam to the bottom of the V and compare the two numbers.

Five outfit combinations to try

Shirt and trousers: Put a knit vest over a button-up shirt, roll the sleeves once or twice, and add straight trousers. Keep the shirt plain if the vest has a pattern. If the vest is a solid colour, a striped shirt works well.

Tee and jeans: A vest over a basic tee is the simplest everyday version. Pick a tee in a neutral colour and let the vest be the focus. Add trainers or boots and you are done.

Long sleeve under, skirt below: A fitted long-sleeve top under a vest, with a pleated or denim skirt, gives you a neat shape. Tights or socks fill in the gap when it is cool.

Turtleneck under: A slim turtleneck beneath a vest gives you warmth at the neck and torso. The Purple Pastel Turtleneck is a soft-coloured base layer to consider, and it comes in S, M and L.

Vest on its own: Some vests work over bare skin with a bralette or camisole, especially for warm evenings, but only if the armholes and neckline feel comfortable and secure. Try it at home before you commit to wearing it out.

Shapes and proportions that work

A cropped vest ends near the waist. It pairs well with high-waisted trousers or skirts and leaves a shirt hem visible if you choose to wear one that is longer. A longer vest ends around the hip and gives a more relaxed line, which suits straight or wide-leg trousers.

Fitted vests follow your shape and look sharp over thin shirts. Looser vests give you room for thicker layers beneath and feel more casual. If you plan to wear a turtleneck or a chunky shirt under it, size by the thicker layer, not the thinnest one.

Balance is the main rule. A boxy vest looks good with slimmer bottoms. A slim vest can handle wider trousers. If both top and bottom are voluminous, add a defined waist with a belt or a tuck so the outfit does not feel shapeless.

Adapting vests to the weather

Cool days: Wear the vest over a long-sleeve top and under a coat or jacket. The vest keeps your core warm while the sleeves of the shirt cover your arms. Because a vest has no sleeves, it layers neatly under outerwear without bunching at the elbows.

Cold days: Add a turtleneck, thick socks and a scarf. Stack your layers from thin to thick: base top, vest, then coat. If you feel the cold in your arms, choose a long-sleeve base that fits close to the skin.

Mild days: Wear the vest over a tee and carry nothing else. If the afternoon warms up, the vest comes off easily and folds into a bag.

Changing weather: When the forecast says one thing and the sky says another, a vest is easy to throw on or take off. It is smaller than a cardigan, so it is easier to stash. If you want something with sleeves for the same job, browse cardigans.

Layering a vest with other knits

LayeringWearing pieces over or under one another to add depth, warmth or contrast. knit over knit is possible, but give the outfit some contrast. A thin knit top under a thicker vest works. Two chunky pieces together can feel heavy and restrict movement.

Pattern mixing is easier than it looks if you keep the scale different. A small-print shirt with a larger-pattern vest reads as deliberate. If you like geometric looks, the argyle sweaters and vests collection has ideas to borrow. For stripes under a plain vest, see striped sweaters and cardigans.

If the vest is bold, keep the rest quiet. The Color Explosion Sweater shows how a colourful knit can carry an outfit on its own. Apply the same thinking to a vest: pick one loud piece and let the others stay plain.

For softer palettes, the Pastel Sweaters collection is a good place to find colours that sit well beneath or beside a vest.

Choosing product options and checking size

Open the product page and look at the available options before anything else. Some items come in S, M and L. Others are one size. Examples across our knitwear include the Soft Kitty Sweater in S, M and L, and the Vintage Contrast Sweater in one size. A one-size item has no size choice, so measurements matter even more.

Size charts differ from one item to the next, and a chart may not be available for every product. Do not assume that a medium in one style matches a medium in another, and do not try to convert sizes from another brand or country. Use the information on the product page and compare actual measurements.

If a product page does not list the measurements you need, check the description and photos for clues about fit, such as whether it looks cropped, loose or close to the body. Then decide how much room you want and choose accordingly.

Compare with a vest or sweater you already own

The most reliable method is to measure something you already wear and like. Lay the garment flat on a bed or table and smooth it out without stretching the knit.

Measure across the chest from one underarm seam to the other. Measure the length from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. If the vest has a V-neck, measure from the shoulder seam to the point of the V. Write the numbers down.

Then compare them with any measurements shown for the item you are considering. If they are close, you can expect a similar fit. If the new piece is wider, expect a looser fit. If it is shorter, expect it to sit higher on your body.

Think about what goes underneath. If you will wear a thicker layer with it, choose a bit more room. If it will sit over a thin top, you can go closer to the fit of your reference garment.

Knitwear can stretch a little when worn, so do not pull your reference garment tight when measuring. Flat and relaxed gives the most honest numbers.

Finishing touches and checkout notes

Accessories can change a vest outfit without much effort. A chunky necklace sits well against a plain collar, and the Gummy Bear Necklace adds a playful detail. For layered looks, the Baby Girl Necklace Set offers a few pieces together. More options are in aesthetic necklaces and chokers.

If you want more knit ideas beyond vests, see the full Sweaters collection or aesthetic sweaters, cardigans and vests. For a vintage feel, the Aesthetic Khaki Sweater comes in S, M and L.

Free standard shipping is available on orders from USD 30. If you shop in another currency, the equivalent amount is shown in your cart. Check the cart for the final details before you pay.

Care matters for knitwear, so read the care label or the product page when your order arrives and follow it. Fold knits rather than hanging them, since hanging can stretch the shoulders over time.
